GTECHNIQ Ceramic Coating in St. Petersburg, FL
Professional car paint protection that lasts years, not weeks. Applied by hand in our St. Petersburg shop by a certified GTECHNIQ applicator with over 20 years of detailing experience.
I'm Dale. I've been detailing vehicles for over 20 years and I run a shop at 1601 4th St N in St. Petersburg, right next to Bob Lee's Tires near downtown. I'm a certified GTECHNIQ applicator, and ceramic coating is one of the services I take most seriously because the results last for years. If it's not done right, you're stuck with it.
This page covers everything: what ceramic coating actually does, what it costs, how long it lasts in Florida's climate, and how our process works. If you'd rather skip the reading and just get a quote, call or text at (727) 557-7803.
What Does Ceramic Coating Do?
Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer applied by hand to your vehicle's exterior surfaces. Once it cures, it chemically bonds with the factory clear coat and creates a semi-permanent protective layer over your paint.
Hydrophobic Protection
Water beads and rolls off instead of sitting on the surface. Dirt, road grime, and pollen have less surface to grip. Your car stays cleaner between washes, and washing takes half the time.
UV Protection
Florida's sun causes oxidation, that chalky, faded look on older paint. Ceramic coating acts as a UV barrier that dramatically slows this process. Critical for any vehicle parked outdoors in the St. Petersburg area.
Chemical Resistance
Bird droppings, bug splatter, tree sap, and salt air are acidic. On unprotected paint, they etch into the clear coat and leave permanent marks. The coating takes that abuse instead of your paint.
Scratch Resistance & Gloss
Won't stop a rock chip, but significantly reduces fine swirl marks and wash scratches. The coating creates a uniform, glass-like surface with noticeably deeper gloss that lasts for years.
What it doesn't do: it's not a substitute for washing, it won't fix existing paint damage, and it's not invisible armor. It's a real, measurable layer of protection that makes your paint more resilient and dramatically easier to maintain.
How Long Does Ceramic Coating Last?
In Florida's climate specifically, not a lab, not a garage in Minnesota. Here's what to expect with proper maintenance:
GTECHNIQ EXO
18 to 24 months
Strong hydrophobic performance. Independently tested to 600 simulated washes with water still beading on treated surfaces.
GTECHNIQ Crystal Serum Light
3 to 5 years
Harder, denser protective layer. Professional-grade only. Superior chemical resistance and gloss depth that lasts for years with basic maintenance.
Crystal Serum Light + EXO Combo
3 to 5+ years
EXO acts as a sacrificial top layer. When it wears down (18 to 24 months), bring it back for a quick EXO refresh. The Crystal Serum Light base stays intact for years without stripping.
Why Florida Is Harder on Coatings
St. Petersburg averages 246 sunny days per year. That's near-constant UV bombardment. Add salt air from the Gulf and Tampa Bay, spring pollen that coats every surface for weeks, love bug season twice a year (their residue permanently etches unprotected clear coat within 48 hours), and daily summer rainstorms leaving mineral deposits on every surface.
A ceramic coating doesn't eliminate these problems. It makes all of them significantly easier to deal with. Pollen rinses off. Bug splatter wipes clean. Water spots don't bond. That's the real, day-to-day value of ceramic car paint protection in Florida.
GTECHNIQ Ceramic Coating Packages & Pricing
Every package starts with a complete hand wash, clay bar decontamination, and surface preparation. The coating only performs as well as the surface underneath it.

GTECHNIQ EXO Hybrid Coating
18 to 24 Month Protection
GTECHNIQ EXO is a hybrid organic/inorganic coating. Excellent water beading and dirt repelling properties. Works on paint, glass, plastic trim, and wheels. A solid entry point if you've never had a coating before, or a smart choice for vehicles you plan to trade in within 2 years.
- Complete hand wash
- Clay bar decontamination
- Surface prep for coating adhesion
- 1 layer of GTECHNIQ EXO applied and cured

GTECHNIQ Crystal Serum Light
3 to 5 Year Protection
Professional-grade ceramic coating. Creates a harder, denser layer than EXO with superior chemical resistance and durability. Not available at retail because it requires certified application in a controlled environment. Improper application creates high spots and uneven coverage that are difficult to correct once cured.
- Complete hand wash
- Clay bar decontamination
- Surface prep for coating adhesion
- 1 layer of GTECHNIQ Crystal Serum Light applied and cured

Crystal Serum Light + EXO Combo
3 to 5+ Year Protection
The top tier. Crystal Serum Light provides a hard, durable base layer. EXO goes on top as a sacrificial layer that handles the daily environmental beating. When the EXO wears down (roughly 18 months), bring it back for a quick EXO reapplication. The base layer stays intact for years. You get the best gloss, the strongest protection, and the most cost-effective long-term maintenance cycle.
- Complete hand wash
- Clay bar decontamination
- Surface prep for coating adhesion
- 1 layer of GTECHNIQ Crystal Serum Light
- 1 layer of GTECHNIQ EXO on top
What affects the price: Vehicle size (SUVs and trucks cost more than sedans), paint condition (polishing quoted separately if needed), and any existing coatings that need stripping.
All prices are starting minimums for intermediate sedans. Subject to 7% FL sales tax. Credit cards and checks accepted and preferred.
For the best results, we recommend a full detail before coating to ensure the paint is properly decontaminated. See all detailing packages and pricing.

Why We Use GTECHNIQ
Independent testing with published data. The EXO 600-wash durability test isn't a marketing claim. It's verified methodology with published results. Most competing brands don't release their testing data because the numbers aren't as strong.
Professional-only product line. Crystal Serum Light requires certified application. You can't buy it on Amazon and have any shop apply it. That certification matters because improper application creates high spots and uneven coverage that's difficult to fix once cured.
The layered system saves money long-term. Most coatings are one-and-done: when they wear off, you strip everything and start over. GTECHNIQ's combo approach means you only refresh the top layer periodically. The base stays bonded for years. Less labor, less cost, better ongoing protection.
Years of local results. We've used GTECHNIQ across hundreds of vehicles in Florida's climate. We know exactly how it performs here, how long it lasts on different paint types, and what the maintenance schedule looks like for this area.
Ceramic Coating vs. Wax
Both have a place. Here's the honest comparison:
| Wax | Ceramic Coating | |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | 4 to 8 weeks in FL | 18 months to 5+ years |
| Protection | Moderate UV/contamination | High UV, chemical, scratch resistance |
| Water Beading | Mild, fades in weeks | Strong, lasts months to years |
| Scratch Resistance | None | Resists fine swirls and wash scratches |
| Cost | Included in full detail ($325+) | $300 to $750+ one-time |
| 3-Year Cost | $1,200+ (waxing every 6 wks) | $500 to $750 once |
| Maintenance | Reapply monthly | Regular washing, annual top-coat |
Wax makes sense if you're on a budget and detail regularly. We apply carnauba wax on every full detail and it does a good job for several weeks.
Ceramic coating makes sense if you're tired of wax washing away after a few Florida rainstorms, you want real long-term protection, or you want to spend less time maintaining your vehicle's appearance. A Crystal Serum Light coating at $500 protects for 3 to 5 years. Comparable waxing costs $400+ per year. Over 3 years, the coating saves you $700 to $1,000 and provides stronger protection.
The Ceramic Coating Process
Inspection & Quote
We inspect the paint condition, vehicle size, and determine the right package. You get a detailed quote before work starts. No surprises, no pressure.
Hand Wash & Decontamination
Complete exterior wash by hand. Clay bar removes embedded contaminants: brake dust, industrial fallout, tar, and mineral deposits. Takes 1 to 2 hours depending on condition.
Paint Preparation
All existing wax, sealant, and residue gets stripped. The coating bonds directly to clear coat, so anything in between compromises adhesion. For vehicles with swirl marks or oxidation, polishing is available (quoted separately). The coating seals in whatever condition the paint is in, so the surface needs to be right first.
Coating Application
Applied by hand, one panel at a time. Each section is coated, leveled, and allowed to flash before moving on. A full Crystal Serum Light application takes 2 to 3 hours of focused work. Rushing creates streaks and high spots.
Cure & Aftercare
Initial cure takes several hours in the shop. Full hardness develops over 7 days. During that first week: no washing, avoid rain, don't apply any products to the coated surfaces. We go over all aftercare instructions at pickup.
Total time: Plan for a full day. Drop off in the morning, pick up late afternoon. Vehicles needing polishing before coating may need additional time.
Is Ceramic Coating Worth It?
Worth it if:
- You're keeping the vehicle 3+ years
- You care about paint condition and resale value
- Your vehicle is parked outside regularly
- You're frustrated with wax wearing off in Florida
- You want to spend less time washing
Might not be worth it if:
- Leasing and returning in under 18 months
- You rarely wash the car (coating helps but isn't maintenance-free)
- Significant paint damage you don't want to fix first
- Budget is the main concern (regular full details with wax cost less upfront)
We'll tell you honestly whether coating makes sense for your situation. If waxing with regular detailing is the better fit, we'll say so.
Ceramic Coating for New Cars
New vehicles are ideal candidates for ceramic coating. The paint is in the best condition it will ever be: no swirl marks from years of car washes, no oxidation from UV exposure, no contamination bonded to the surface. Coating a new car locks in that factory-fresh condition for years.
Most new car owners skip the polishing step entirely because the surface is already clean. That means lower total cost and faster turnaround.
We recommend the Crystal Serum Light or combo package for new vehicles. If you're spending $35K+ on a car, $500 to $750 to protect the paint from day one is straightforward math.
Ceramic Coating for Black & Dark Paint
If you own a black, dark blue, dark gray, or dark green vehicle, you already know: every water spot, every swirl mark, every fingerprint shows. Dark paint is unforgiving.
- Swirl marks become almost invisible. The harder coating surface reduces micro-scratches from washing.
- Water spots don't bond. The hydrophobic surface sheds water before minerals can deposit.
- Gloss depth is dramatically enhanced. The uniform coating reflects light more evenly, making dark paint look wet and deep.
- Washing is easier and safer. Less scrubbing means fewer new swirl marks every wash cycle.
If you drive a dark-colored vehicle in St. Petersburg and it's parked outside, ceramic coating isn't a luxury. It's the only way to keep that paint looking the way it should.

How to Maintain Your Ceramic Coating
A coated car still needs regular washing. The difference is everything takes less time because contaminants don't bond as aggressively to the protected surface.
Do
- Wash every 2 to 3 weeks (outdoor parked) or 3 to 4 weeks (garaged)
- Use pH-neutral car shampoo
- Two-bucket method or foam cannon
- Microfiber wash mitt and drying towel only
- Wash immediately after bird droppings, bug splatter, or tree sap
Don't
- Automatic car washes (brushes damage the coating)
- Abrasive polishes or compounds (they remove the coating)
- Skip washes for months
- Dish soap or all-purpose cleaners (too harsh)
Annual refresh (combo package): Bring it back once a year for an EXO top-layer reapplication. Quick visit, fraction of the original cost, and your protection is back to full strength.
For interior maintenance, professional interior detailing every 6 to 12 months keeps the inside matching the outside.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does ceramic coating cost in St. Petersburg?
Starting at $300 for GTECHNIQ EXO (18 to 24 months), $500 for Crystal Serum Light (3 to 5 years), and $750 for the combo (3 to 5+ years). These are minimums for intermediate sedans. SUVs, trucks, and vehicles needing paint correction cost more. You always get a detailed quote before work starts.
How long does ceramic coating last on a car?
In Florida with regular washing: EXO lasts 18 to 24 months, Crystal Serum Light 3 to 5 years, and the combo 3 to 5+ years with annual EXO refreshes. Garage-parked vehicles with proper maintenance trend toward the higher end of these ranges.
Is ceramic coating worth it in Florida?
For most owners keeping their vehicle, yes. Florida's UV, salt air, pollen, love bugs, and summer rainstorms create more environmental stress on paint than almost any other state. A $500 coating protects for 3 to 5 years. Equivalent waxing costs $400+ per year. Over 3 years, the coating saves you $700 to $1,000 with stronger protection.
What's the difference between ceramic coating and wax?
Wax sits on top of paint and washes away in 4 to 8 weeks. Ceramic coating bonds to the clear coat and lasts 18 months to 5+ years. Coating provides stronger UV, chemical, and scratch protection with a deeper, longer-lasting gloss.
Do I need paint correction before ceramic coating?
Not always. Light surface prep is included in every package. If the paint has deeper scratches, heavy swirl marks, or oxidation, polishing before coating is recommended and quoted separately. Ceramic coating permanently seals in whatever condition the paint is in, so getting the surface right matters.
Can you ceramic coat a new car?
New cars are ideal. The paint is in its best condition, so coating locks in factory-fresh quality for years. Most new vehicles skip the polishing step entirely, which means lower cost and faster turnaround.
How long does the ceramic coating process take?
Full day, approximately 6 to 8 hours. Drop off in the morning, pick up late afternoon. Vehicles needing paint correction may require additional time.
